IRD interactive small business tool

Inland Revenue has created a one-stop information portal for small business owners, ‘Tool for Business’. The online, interactive tool explains what small business owners need to know to start and maintain a business, from a taxation perspective. The tool is informed by commonly asked questions from real business people. It categorically tackles important questions, such as:

How do I start a business?

What records do I need to keep?

How does tax work?

Do I need to register for GST?

What do I do if I employ someone?

The portal also provides many useful links and resources if you need more information. Click here to use the ‘Tool for Business’ and see what you think.
Free Property Management Software

Online software is now making many jobs that traditionally people loved to hate easier. Simplfy’em from T-ReX Global is one such product. It offers landlords, or those managing properties on another’s behalf, a quick and basic tool to track rental expenses and income, create and export reports, generate invoices and upload and store documents. The software allows you to set up and host up to four properties for free. The graphics are clean and it is very easy to navigate.

There are only two downfalls at a glance. Firstly, it’s American, so the default expense settings list “trash removal” and “hurricane insurance”, however it’s a minor issue because all categories are easily overwritten to meet your local needs. Secondly, the software won’t tell you the ins and outs of being a landlord in New Zealand, so you need a basic understanding to ensure you use the software properly. As with most free products they don’t give you premium features, which often offer ultimate functionality, but as a basic tool this is worth having a look at.

To test drive this software click here and if you need help with the ins and outs of managing your property contact us and we'll help.
